Pneumatic Control of Robots for Rehabilitation
نویسندگان
چکیده
Pneumatic actuators are attractive for robotic rehabilitation applications because they are lightweight, powerful, and compliant, but their control has historically been difficult, limiting their use. In this paper we present the pneumatic control system developed for Pneu-WREX: a pneumatically actuated, upper extremity orthosis for rehabilitation after stroke. The developed pneumatic control system combines several novel components to make the entire system stable, reliable, and backdrivable. These components, which are described in this paper, include: (1) a unique two-valve force control subsystem that keeps chamber pressure low (to reduce friction and energy consumption) and adaptively compensates for leakage (2) a new servovalve characterization approach that uses experimentally measured data in a combined non-linear and least-squares regression to obtain a linear relationship between mass flow and valve voltage and (3) a new approach to state estimation using accelerometers and a Kalman filter to obtain clean signals for use in a non-linear adaptive feedback conThe International Journal of Robotics Research Vol. 29, No. 1, January 2010, pp. 23–38 DOI: 10.1177/0278364909103787 c The Author(s), 2010. Pneumatic muscles (PMs)-driven robots become more and more popular in medical and rehabilitation field as the actuators are intrinsically complaint and thus are safer for patients than traditional rigid robots. This paper proposes a new compliance adaptation method of a soft ankle rehabilitation robot that is driven by four pneumatic muscles enabling three rotational movement degrees of freedo...
متن کاملA New Intelligent Approach to Patient-cooperative Control of Rehabilitation Robots
This paper presents a new intelligent method to control rehabilitation robots by mainly considering reactions of patient instead of doing a repetitive preprogrammed movement. It generates a general reference trajectory based on different reactions of patient during therapy. Three main reactions has been identified and included in reference trajectory: small variations, force shocks in a single ...

In recent years, Japanese society has been aging, engendering a labor shortage of young workers. Robots are therefore expected to perform tasks such as rehabilitation, nursing elderly people, and day-to-day work support for elderly people. The pneumatic balloon actuator is a rubber artificial muscle developed for use in a robot hand in such environments. This actuator has a long stroke and a hi...

Development of automation and robotization in manufacturing process stimulates interest in pneumatic servo-systems whose advantages include low manufacturing costs, high dynamics and reliability (Situm et al., 2004). Unsatisfactory positioning accuracy of multiaxis pneumatic servosytems considerably reduces their application in manipulating machines, manipulators and robots. Rapid advance in pa...
متن کاملDisturbance-Estimated Adaptive Backstepping Sliding Mode Control of a Pneumatic Muscles-Driven Ankle Rehabilitation Robot
A rehabilitation robot plays an important role in relieving the therapists' burden and helping patients with ankle injuries to perform more accurate and effective rehabilitation training. However, a majority of current ankle rehabilitation robots are rigid and have drawbacks in terms of complex structure, poor flexibility and lack of safety. Taking advantages of pneumatic muscles' good flexibil...
